The project was inspired by Tenzin Palmo who was one of the first western women to be ordained as a Tibetan buddhist nun. Recognizing the discrimination against women in the tradition she founded the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery to give the nuns a chance to realise their intellectual and spiritual potential.

These photographs were taken in 2001, the very early days of the nunnery, when the land had just been purchased. The motivation was to help raise money and awareness about the nuns in this tradition.
